Description
R Welschriesling is a vibrant orange natural wine crafted by from the rolling hills of Štajerska in northeastern Slovenia, made by childhood friends Marko Grušovnik and Matija Žerjav. Their small winemaking project focuses on bringing old family vineyards back to life, producing expressive natural wines with minimal intervention in the cellar.
Made from Welshriesling grapes fermented on their skins for nine days, this orange wine brings a completely different dimension to the variety, which is a grape not often made into a skin-contact wine. The extended maceration adds texture, subtle tannins and depth, while preserving the freshness and acidity that make it so distinctive.
This wine has vibrant citrus, dried fruits, gentle spice and a pronounced mineral character. We enjoyed notes of tangerine spritzed oils and honey blossom on the nose, followed by lots of stewed apricot and herbs on the palate that really impress.
Chalky tannins and tension on the palate. This is VERY GOOD for the price!
An interesting introduction to Slovenian orange wine, especially for Riesling lovers looking to explore something beyond the classic white wine style.
