Description
Empress 1908 Original Gin is the gin that started the Empress 1908 range. Victoria Distillers makes it in Victoria, British Columbia. It was one of Canada’s first premium gins, and it reached U.S. shelves in May 2026.
Ten botanicals go into the still with pure Canadian water. Juniper and citrus lead the way, with lemon and orange peel. Star anise and sarsaparilla add depth. Master Distiller Phil Lecours makes it by hand in small-batch copper pot stills.
The nose is juniper-forward, with lemon zest and an herbal edge. On the palate, juniper and orange peel meet peppery spice and earthy sarsaparilla. The finish is long and slightly dry, with anise and a hint of pine.
It has enough body to sip neat over a large cube. Most of the time, though, you will want it in a Martini or a Gin & Tonic with a citrus twist. The brand also suggests a Fan Tan Sidecar or a Kiwi Smash.
Serve it with smoked salmon, sushi, goat cheese or a citrus salad.
