WhistlePig Old World 12 Year is a rye whiskey from , the rye brand based on a farm in Vermont. It is aged for 12 years, then finished in three kinds of European wine casks. The brand gives the split as 63% Madeira, 30% Sauternes and 7% Port. Sauternes is a sweet white dessert wine from Bordeaux. Each part is finished on its own, and then the parts are blended. The goal is simple. You get bold American rye spice shaped by old-world wine character. It is bottled at 86 proof, or 43% ABV.

The nose is warm and inviting. Caramel and vanilla come first, followed by dark winter fruit. Take a sip and rye spice greets you right away. Apricot and plum follow, then raisins and dates. A layer of honey softens the spice and keeps things round. The wine casks show up as ripe fruit rather than anything sharp. It feels layered, yet you can still pick out each note.

The finish is long. Dark chocolate arrives first, and the winter fruit stays with it. Caramel and vanilla return at the end, so the glass closes much the way it opened. It’s a rye that rewards slow sipping. Give it a few minutes in the glass before you dive in, and it keeps opening up.

WhistlePig lists a strong set of honors for this bottle. It won Double Gold at the World Spirits Competition. The Sip Awards gave it Platinum and Best of Class. It took Gold at the International Spirits Challenge and at Whiskies of the World. Robb Report also named it among its Best of the Best.

Pour it neat to get the full picture. If you want a cocktail, a premium Old Fashioned lets the fruit and spice shine. For food, reach for dark chocolate, aged cheese, smoked meats or roasted nuts. Sweet bites bring out the rye spice, while salty cheese lifts the fruit.

This bottle is for the drinker who wants more than a standard . If you enjoy wine-cask finishes and a long, fruity close, you will feel right at home. If you prefer light and simple pours, a younger rye could be a better place to start. Either way, it makes a memorable gift for the rye lover in your life.
