Description
The Macallan Harmony Collection Intense Arabica is a Speyside single malt built around one idea: coffee. It is the second edition of the Harmony Collection, the annual limited series from . The first edition, Rich Cacao, looked to chocolate. This one takes its cue from the Ethiopian Arabica bean. Ethiopia is often called the birthplace of coffee. Nothing is added to the whisky, though. The coffee character comes from the spirit and its casks. Macallan simply chose casks whose flavors echo a fine cup of coffee.
Whisky maker Steven Bremner spent time with coffee experts to learn the journey from field to cup. He then built the flavor with sherry-seasoned casks of European and American oak. The result has a warm color that Macallan calls crema. It is bottled at 44% ABV.
Bring the glass to your nose and tiramisu and cappuccino arrive first. Gingerbread, raisins and almonds follow. Sweet oak and vanilla sit underneath and keep it soft. It reads a lot like a good café dessert counter. Give it a minute in the glass, and the coffee notes grow deeper and richer.
The palate leans into espresso and dark chocolate. Raisin, blackberry and more tiramisu come through next. Brazil nut, vanilla and sweet oak fill in the middle. The texture feels soft and slightly oily. The finish is long and balanced, with sweet, dark roast coffee that lingers well after you swallow.
Macallan suggests a simple coffee tasting at home. Brew two Ethiopian coffees, ideally Harrar and Guji, and pour them side by side. Sip the whisky, then each coffee, and compare what you notice. A bowl of salted popcorn rounds it out. At dessert it pairs nicely with tiramisu or dark chocolate mousse. Roasted nuts or spiced pork also work if you prefer something savory. A small square of dark chocolate is an easy match, too.
The packaging is part of the story. The red gift box uses recycled materials, including coffee bean husks that would otherwise go to waste. Its color nods to the ripe coffee cherry. If you love coffee as much as whisky, this bottle is a joy to explore. It also makes a thoughtful gift for the Macallan fan who seems to have everything. Because each Harmony edition is limited, it tends not to stay around for long.
