Description
The Macallan Double Cask Gold is the friendly, easygoing member of the Double Cask range. It carries no age statement. Instead, the whisky makers choose casks for flavor and color. That color is all natural, a warm shade The Macallan calls harvest sun.
The secret is in the wood. The whisky matures in a mix of American and European oak casks, all seasoned with Oloroso sherry. Some are first-fill casks and some are refill. The American oak brings sweetness and vanilla. The European oak adds dried fruit and spice. It is made at the Macallan distillery in Speyside, in the Scottish Highlands.
Lift the glass and you will find creamy butterscotch and a hint of toffee apple. Candied orange, vanilla custard and freshly cut oak follow. The palate is honeyed and gentle. Wood spice and citrus balance raisins and soft caramel.
The oak returns on the finish. It lingers warm and sweet, then turns pleasantly dry. Bottled at 40% ABV, it is smooth enough for anyone new to single malt.
Enjoy it neat or over a large ice cube on a warm day. A little water will lift the fruit and spice. Try it with shortbread, crème brûlée or roasted almonds. Aged gouda and smoked salmon are good savory matches. If you want a soft, sherried Macallan for relaxed evenings, this bottle is a great place to start.
