Description

The Balvenie A Collection of Curious Casks 14 Year Old is a limited single malt from Dufftown in Speyside. It comes from a distillery that has been making whisky since 1892. This bottle has a story that started almost by accident. The whisky spent its whole 14 years in American bourbon barrels.

The cask was first set aside to become a Balvenie Single Barrel 12 Year Old. Then the team noticed something odd. A soft, smoky note had started to appear in the spirit. No peat had been used at all. So they left it in the wood a little longer to see where it would go. Two more years in the barrel let that gentle smoke grow and settle. It is a rare case of peat-like character that came from the cask alone. The team had not planned it, which is what makes the bottle fun.

That curiosity gave the whole series its name. A Collection of Curious Casks arrived in July 2024 as part of The Balvenie Stories range. It celebrates Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie and George Paterson, who looks after the warehouse samples. Together they picked out casks that surprised them. Kelsey took over as Malt Master from David C. Stewart MBE in 2022. She trained under him for many years before stepping into the role. George spends his days drawing samples and tracking how each cask is changing. The series grew out of the casks that caught their attention.

The 14 Year Old American Bourbon Barrel is one of four releases in the set. Its siblings are an 18 Year Old French Pineau Cask and an 11 Year Old Hungarian Red Wine Cask. A 17 Year Old New Spanish Oak Cask is sold only at the distillery. The 11 Year Old went to travel retail shops. The 18 Year Old and this 14 Year Old are the two you will find on store shelves. This one is bottled at 47.8% without chill filtration. Its color is natural, straight from the cask.

Craft runs deep at The Balvenie. The distillery still malts some of its own barley. It keeps its own team of coopers on site. The spirit runs through traditional copper pot stills. Very few distilleries in Scotland still handle so many steps in-house. Barley, barrels and stills are all looked after by people who know them well. All of that care shows in this glass, and it gives the whisky a calm, honeyed house style.

Nose it slowly and a velvety sweetness greets you. Rich toffee and glowing oak come next, then crisp citrus. A honeyed musk ties it all together. On the palate, candied orange peel leads the way. Woody, earthy notes of roasted malt follow, along with deep vanilla from the oak. That faint natural smoke sits quietly underneath. It never takes over, so the sweet malt stays in charge. The finish is long and lingering. The vanilla oak and citrus fade slowly, and the warmth stays with you for a while.

You can match it with plenty of foods. Try aged cheddar or gouda, or a creamy blue cheese. It also works with smoked salmon, grilled meats or roast lamb. For dessert, reach for dark chocolate, spiced fruit cake or crème brûlée. A handful of roasted nuts on the side is never a bad idea. The honey and citrus in the whisky love salty, savory bites.

Pour it neat, or add a few drops of water to open it up. Take your time with each sip and let it change in the glass. Collectors who enjoy a good backstory will love this bottle. So will anyone curious to taste smoke that came from the cask alone. Share it with friends who think they know Balvenie well. This bottle may surprise them, just as it surprised the people who made it.
