Winemaker’s Notes
Rich and beautifully focused from top to bottom. Deep, and vibrant red fruits and baking spices aromas inform the palate which is supple, serious, and wonderfully fresh. Although charming now, it will continue to improve over several years.
The Sanford Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir is always a blend from both of our estate vineyards: the historic Sanford & Benedict Vineyard (44%) and La Rinconada (56%). These singular vineyards are in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. A wide range of Pinot Noir selections are planted on these sites, and this wine is a blend of 8 of these from several different soil types.
Critic Ratings
Wine Spectator Review – Rated 93:
This is youthfully coiled up, with bright acidity holding the succulent core of kirsch, cherry and mulberry fruit in check right now. Lovely black tea, warm slate and iris accents peek in on the finish, which offers tension and length. Best from 2027 through 2035.
James Suckling Review – Rated 92:
Elegant, balanced and appetizing, offering the classic red cherry, black tea and savory, leafy character of the grape variety on a good, tangy texture. Light to medium in body, slightly tannic, which adds to the mouthfeel. Lingering finish.
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate Review – Rated 91:
The 2023 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills derives predominantly from Sanford & Benedict, with inclusions from La Rinconada, and was fermented with around one-third whole clusters. A red-fruited, perfumed bouquet with accents of underbrush introduces a poised and silky palate, followed by a lifted, vibrant finish that lingers with a subtle, chalky tannic grip.
