Selected from the best—north-facing!—parcels in Verzenay (Montagne de Reims) and assembling Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in equal parts, Penet’s 2009 Grand Cru Millésime Cuvée Diane Claire opens with a deep, intense, very clear, pure and refined bouquet of perfectly ripe fruits, floral aromas, delicate brioche, Turkish honey, almond and even chalky notes. Crazy fascinating! The palate is round and rich but dry, fine, fresh and still pure, with lingering mineral freshness and great complexity. This is a hugely structured but delicate, refined and stimulating Champagne of first class and character. One of the best 2009s I have had so far and one of the finest and most impressive Champagnes I have tasted from Alexandre Penet thus far. Harvested on the 23rd of September, fermented with no malolactic and bottled in May 2010, this was disgorged as Extra Brut on November 20th, 2016. Tasted in July 2018.
