Description
Patrón El Alto is the brand’s luxury reposado, launched in November 2022. The name nods to where the agave grows: the highest parts of Jalisco, around Atotonilco El Alto. Master Distiller David Rodriguez led more than 300 tastings over four years to get it right.
It blends three Patrón tequilas: Extra Añejo, Añejo and Reposado. The Extra Añejo part is aged four years. The tequilas rest in 11 types of barrel, mostly hybrids with American oak bodies and French oak heads. Those barrels help bring out the dried fruit notes.
Like every Patrón, it starts with 100% Blue Weber agave. The agave bakes in clay brick ovens and is crushed with a volcanic stone tahona and a roller mill. Patrón then distills it twice in small copper pot stills. It is bottled at 40% ABV.
The color is a bright, light gold. On the nose you find soft, sweet agave, dried fruit and toasted wood. The palate is bright, with apricot, vanilla, almond and cooked agave. Some reviewers also note fig, honey and caramel. It finishes smooth and gently sweet.
This is a tequila for slow sipping. Pour it neat into a tasting glass, or over one large cube of ice. Give it a few minutes to open up as it warms. Dark chocolate, aged gouda, smoked nuts or crème brûlée make fine partners.
