Hell Bear comes from Mythology Distillery in Colorado. It is an that marries straight rye with straight bourbon. You get the spice of rye and the sweetness of bourbon in one easy glass.
The recipe is laid out clearly by the distillery. The rye is five years old and made from 95% rye and 5% malted barley. One bourbon is also five years old, with 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted barley. The other is a six year bourbon made with corn, wheat and malted barley. It is bottled at 90 proof.
Fruit and soft botanicals greet you first, with a hint of berries. By mid-palate the rye takes over with big cinnamon spice. Then it settles into a smooth vanilla and caramel finish. Sweet cereal grain and baking spice hang around at the end.
This is friendly enough to sip neat. A single ice cube cools the spice if you prefer it softer. It also makes a great Old Fashioned. The distillery likes it in a lemon mule too.
