Les Champ Levat is one of Jean-Yves’ most popular reds, made from Mondeuse, the local red grape of Savoie. The fruit comes from two plots on different soil types.
The whole bunches macerate for around two weeks before pressing, and the wine is then aged in 225L barrels. Native yeasts and no added sulphites. It sits at 11% alcohol.
We have not yet tried this wine, but hear it has tangy red fruit, bright acidity and a graphite-like finish, and that 2023 is a standout vintage for this cuvée. Sounds like a perfect entry point to Mondeuse, and to Jean-Yves’ reds in general. As with all his wines, be sure to drink in one sitting as it may not hold overnight
