Bottled at barrel strength, James E Pepper 1776 Straight Bourbon Whiskey arrives at 113.4 proof, or 56.7% ABV, in a 750 ml bottle. Nothing is cut back after the barrel, so the wood’s imprint comes through in full: strong oak up front, deep caramel underneath, and a run of spice and char across the palate.
The finish is powerful and long, in keeping with an undiluted pour. This is the distillery’s full-flavored side on display, aimed at bourbon drinkers who want the barrel’s character left intact rather than softened.
