Hangar 1 Straight Vodka is made in Alameda, California. The distillery sits in an old World War II aircraft hangar at the former naval air station. From there you can see the Bay Bridge and San Francisco across the water.
Most vodkas use only grain, but this one adds grapes. The team blends a spirit made from Midwestern wheat with a distillate of Viognier wine grapes. They make the grape spirit in a small Holstein pot still. Grapes make up roughly 10% to 25% of the mix, depending on the batch.
That grape side shows the moment you pour. The nose is fresh and slightly floral, with honeysuckle and Asian pear. On the palate it feels balanced, soft and round, with a gentle fruity note. The finish is light and lightly perfumed.
Because it has real character, it shines in simple drinks. Shake a crisp martini, build a Moscow mule or top it with soda and a squeeze of citrus. On a hot day, try it in a mint limeade. Fans of fine will also enjoy it chilled and neat.
Set out smoked salmon, oysters or caviar alongside it. Mild cheeses and light appetizers work just as well. It is a smart pick if you want a smooth vodka with a little more personality. It suits a party as well as a quiet drink at home.
