Description
Green River Kentucky Straight Bourbon comes from one of the state’s oldest whiskey names. John W. McCulloch founded Green River Distilling Co. in Owensboro in 1885. It was sold as “The Whiskey Without Regrets” and won a gold medal and Best of Show at the 1900 Paris Exposition. A grand prize followed at the 1905 Liège Exposition in Belgium.
Fire and Prohibition stopped the stills for more than a century. Distilling started again on the original Owensboro site in 2020. This bourbon reached shelves in 2022, the first Green River bourbon in over a hundred years. It is distilled, aged and bottled on site.
The mash bill is 70% Kentucky-grown corn, 21% rye and 9% malted barley. That higher rye share gives the whiskey its warm spice. It rests for more than five years and is bottled at 90 proof.
You’ll pick up cinnamon and dried cherry on the nose, with a little light leather. On the palate, warming spice meets vanilla and caramel. Chocolate-coated peppermint follows. The finish is rich, thick and long.
Pour it neat or over one large cube when you want to taste every layer. It also makes a lively Old Fashioned or Whiskey Sour. It is a great base for at home. Steak, BBQ ribs and dark chocolate all match its spice.
