Description
Grand Marnier Cuvée du Centenaire was created in 1927 by Louis-Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle. He made it to mark 100 years since the house was founded in 1827. At first it was only given as a gift to family, friends and clients.
The blend is about 82% cognac. These are XO cognacs, mostly from the Grande and Petite Champagne crus, aged up to 25 years. They are paired with an essence of bitter Caribbean oranges that are dried in the sun. The finished blend matures for at least two years in Tronçais oak casks at Château Grand Marnier.
In the glass it shows medium amber with copper tints. The nose brings candied orange woven with soft spice, plus vanilla and dried fruit. On the palate it feels rich, fine and velvety. Candied orange peel and old cognac lead the way, with bitter marmalade and a light touch of oak.
The finish is long and lingering. Citrus, a thread of cinnamon and a hint of bitter almond stay with you. It tastes a little less sweet and more refined than the classic Grand Marnier.
The house suggests serving it neat in a sipping glass, with ice on the side. It makes a lovely close to a special dinner. Reviewers see it mostly as a sipper, though it also makes a rich Sidecar. Try it with dark chocolate, a fine dessert or aged cheese. It comes in a 750ml bottle at 40% ABV, and it makes a memorable gift.
