Description
Glenfiddich 1963 Limited Edition, released as The Original, brings back a famous bottle. The 1963 Straight Malt was the first single malt actively promoted outside Scotland. Sandy Grant Gordon, great-grandson of founder William Grant, was behind it.
Malt Master Brian Kinsman recreated it in 2014. He tasted a preserved 1963 sample and followed the recipe in a 1960s ledger. It nods to the sherry butts common back then.
The nose is floral, with Glenfiddich’s signature pear, biscuity malt and soft vanilla. The palate is light and fruity, with malty sweetness, gentle citrus and a hint of sherry spice. The finish is fairly short and dry, with a touch of oak.
It comes in the classic triangular bottle at 40% ABV. Sip it neat.
It is a lovely pour if you wonder how single malt tasted in the 1960s.
