Description

Elijah Craig Toasted Rye comes from Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. It starts life as fully matured Elijah Craig . The mash bill is 51% rye, 35% corn and 14% malted barley. That recipe has been the classic Kentucky rye formula since Prohibition ended. Once mature, the whiskey is dumped and refilled at barrel proof into a second barrel.

That second barrel is what sets this bottle apart. Heaven Hill designed it with Independent Stave Company. Each new oak barrel gets a custom toast that lasts close to an hour. Then a cap goes on and the heat climbs very high. This presses phenols into the wood and adds a light smoky touch. The toast also caramelizes the inside of the barrel. Because the barrel is new and charred, the whiskey still counts as Kentucky straight rye.

Pour a glass and toasted oak and crème brûlée lead the nose. Almond and hazelnut sit just behind them. On the palate you get milk chocolate and gentle baking spice. The texture is creamy and rounded rather than sharp. The finish is soft and warm, and the spice stays with you for a while. It is a calmer, sweeter take on rye than many bottles on the shelf.

At 94 proof it is easy to sip neat. Add a few drops of water if you want the nutty notes to come forward. It also works well in a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned. The toasted sweetness rounds off vermouth and bitters nicely. If you liked Toasted Barrel Bourbon, think of this as its rye sibling.

At dinner, try it with grilled steak, barbecued ribs or roasted lamb. Smoked salmon and aged gouda make lighter matches. For dessert, set it beside pecan pie, dark chocolate truffles or a crème brûlée to echo the nose.

You will enjoy it if you like with a twist. Bourbon drinkers curious about rye will find it friendly and approachable. If you mostly drink clean, , its toasty depth may feel like a lot at first. It launched as a highly allocated release, so it is worth picking up when you spot it.
