Description
Duckhorn Vineyards is one of Napa Valley’s best known wineries. Dan and Margaret Duckhorn founded it in 1976. Dan made his first Napa Valley Merlot with the 1978 vintage, inspired by a trip to Bordeaux. Duckhorn was among the first in the region to put front and center.
This 375ml half bottle is a good size for two people or a quiet night in. The blend is mostly Merlot, with some and Cabernet Franc. Some vintages also add a little Petit Verdot and Malbec. The winery follows sustainable farming practices.
The wine ages about 15 months in French oak, with roughly 40% new barrels. Alcohol sits near 14.5%. Blend and alcohol shift a little from year to year, so check the label on your vintage.
Duckhorn describes floral aromas and dark red berries. Recent vintages show ripe cherry, raspberry and plum, with a touch of chocolate. Some years also show cedar or a hint of vanilla from the oak. The palate feels smooth and polished, with the tannins well blended into the fruit. The finish is long and vibrant.
Critics keep coming back to it. The 2018 vintage earned 93 points from Wilfred Wong of Wine.com.
Serve it slightly cool, near cellar temperature. It’s lovely with roast duck, grilled lamb or mushroom risotto. A grilled ribeye works well too.
