This rye is made from 100% estate-grown Rymin rye. It was distilled, aged and bottled at Kentucky Artisan Distillery in Crestwood. The first release carried a six-year age statement, well past the four-year bonded minimum. Only 70 barrels went into it, and it is bottled at 100 proof.

The nose is lively. You get spearmint, cinnamon, brown sugar and black pepper, with light cayenne and a floral lift. Raisin, plum and a hint of pipe tobacco sit underneath.

Cinnamon, black pepper and anise lead the palate. The finish is mellow and medium in length. Pepper, cayenne, allspice and a little raisin linger as it fades. It feels calm for its strength.

Sip it neat to catch the mint and spice. A cube of ice will tame the pepper if you like. It also makes a sharp Manhattan or Old Fashioned. Try it with grilled meats, spicy barbecue or aged cheddar. If you like your rye bold and peppery, this one belongs on your shelf.
