Château Margaux 2012, First Growth Bordeaux.

Château Margaux is one of the four original First Growths of 1855, and its 2012 Grand Vin is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, aged 22 months in new oak. A cold winter and a very wet spring gave way to a dry, moderately warm summer from mid-July, and the reds were picked between September 25 and October 16, ahead of the worst of the autumn rain. Young vines struggled with the sudden switch from wet to dry, so a strict selection put less than 34% of the harvest into the Grand Vin, which the estate calls “almost” a great vintage, close to its 2010. Robert Parker of Wine Advocate (95 points) found it denser and richer in bottle than in cask and wrote that it “should handsomely repay those who buy it,” with an anticipated maturity of 2023 to 2040. 13.0% ABV, 750ml.
