What happens when Ardbeg removes the purifier from the still? Heavy Vapours is the answer: an Islay single malt that trades the distillery’s usual balance of peat and floral fruit for something darker and heavier. The result runs thick with smoke, sweetness and a pungent, farmyard-edged aromatic weight.
On the nose, creosote and tarry rope sit alongside that cloying sweetness. Water opens things up, drawing out dark chocolate cream threaded with smoked artichoke. Non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV in a 750 ml bottle, it’s a full-strength look at Ardbeg’s spirit without its usual restraint.
