Description
Angel’s Envy Cellar Collection Vol. 5 is a limited straight rye from Louisville, Kentucky. It starts with rye aged up to seven years. That rye rests for up to 12 months in French oak barrels that held for four years. The team then blends it with a straight rye aged more than 11 years.
Pour a glass and you get floral, fruit-forward aromas. Toasty vanilla follows, with a faint smoky hint of clove. The first sip brings baking spices and cracked pepper. Herbal agave syrup calms the spice, while earthy tobacco and brown sugar fill in the middle.
The French oak keeps the finish soft and balanced. Orange blossom honey and tropical fruit linger at the end. Those old barrels give it a side you rarely meet in rye.
Judges liked it too. Vol. 5 won Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. It also earned Silver at the SIP Awards, the John Barleycorn Awards and the New Orleans Spirits Competition. The Sunset International Spirits Competition gave it Bronze.
It is bottled at 104.2 proof, so there is plenty of depth here. Sip the neat first. Then add a few drops of water to open the sweeter notes. Caramel desserts or spiced nuts make easy partners.
