Description
This is the first Bottled-in-Bond release from Angel’s Envy in Louisville, Kentucky. It is also the brand’s first unfinished whiskey. There is no port cask here and no finishing barrel at all. You get pure Kentucky straight bourbon, just as it came from the oak.
Bottled-in-Bond rules go back to the Act of 1897. The whiskey must come from one distilling season and rest at least four years in a bonded warehouse. It must be bottled at exactly 100 proof. Master Distiller Owen Martin filled the barrels at a lower entry proof. After nearly six years, the blend could be bottled at 100 proof with no water added.
The mash bill is 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley. The color is toasted gold. The nose brings lightly caramelized sugar and vanilla wafers. A hint of banana pudding sits underneath. On the palate it is sweet and balanced, with honey latte, light fruit syrup and toasted oak. The finish is soft and fades gently.
Even at full strength, it drinks gently. Try it neat, then add a drop of water or a large ice cube. Pair it with pecan pie, smoked brisket or dark chocolate.
It suits you if you like bourbon in its plain, honest form, or if you collect Angel’s Envy.
