After Shock Hot & Cool is the bright red cinnamon liqueur that ruled party bars in the 1990s. It arrived in 1995 with a simple promise: first it’s hot, then it’s cool. The name tells you exactly what happens when you drink it. Today the brand belongs to Suntory Global Spirits.
The base is a neutral spirit flavored with cinnamon, peppermint and a touch of anise. Hot cinnamon candy fills the nose, with peppermint just underneath. The first taste is very sweet and a little syrupy. Then the cinnamon heat builds, and a cool wave of peppermint follows. The finish stays warm and spicy before it turns cool and sweet.
Look closely and you may spot sugar crystals at the bottom of the bottle. That is normal for After Shock and part of its charm.
This is a shot first and foremost. Chill the bottle well and pour it straight. It also works in easy , and it mixes nicely with cola or apple cider. Try it beside dark chocolate, apple pie or spicy snacks.
